As a result of an old Greek film, Lesvos takes tables outside,
on the Benaki sidewalk, and serves fresh seafood
with traditional ouzo appetizers from Mytilene, which you will hardly find anywhere else.
Wooden coffee tables, coffee table mats
maps of the island, colorful mosaic inside,
plans of Theophilos and an olive tree in a pot,
give the atmosphere the atmosphere of a traditional Athenian ouzo.
And this tradition is authentic: Lesbos is in the same position,
at 38 in Benaki, for exactly forty years.
She moved there three years after she started working
opposite, in 1967. Nearly nothing has changed in its philosophy ever since.
The menu changes every day, depending on what the boat caught in Lesvos.
The only sure thing is that everything you try will be fresh
and you will have picked it from the showcase, to be sure what you order.
Note that the village is top - because on the island they know good oil
- the octopus is juicy, and the zucchini are reminiscent of Mammy.
