Tradition says that the officer Ottoman Yusuf wanted to fire a cannon from the Acropolis in order to destroy the church and kill the people who had come to celebrate Saint Demetrius. However a thunder from the sudden storm that started managed to blow up the emplacement of the Acropolis and the church was saved.
The temple dates back to the years of the Ottoman rule, while others say it dates back to the 9th century. It has a vaulted, cylindrical roof that has been made with ancient architectural pieces as the small pillar that supports the altar and two small columns located in the courtyard of the entrance.
In 1955 it was restored by the famous architect Dimitris Pikionis who also discovered several Byzantine frescoes of the year1700.
You can reach the church if you follow Pikionis paved road, which will lead you through smaller paths all the way to the the hill of the Acropolis in a typical Mediterranean environment.
